Toll Free Area Codes Work Throughout the U.S. and Canada

A recent blog on a business website promoted toll free phone numbers as one element of a comprehensive marketing plan. But in a thread of discussion that followed, several contributors seemed to be under the misimpression that different toll free area codes are tied to different regions of the country. Not so.

In fact, the four available toll free area codes—800, 888, 877, and 866 are considered toll free throughout the United States and Canada. Subscribers in New York, Florida, California—or any other state--can obtain any of the four area codes. Incoming calls can originate from anywhere in North America.

The available toll free area codes are not tied exclusively to any one region—you can sign on for any of the area codes from an approved toll free service provider.

New area codes—currently held in reserve by the FCC until supplies of available numbers drop—will work the same way. The yet-to-be-released 855, 844, 833 and 822 numbers will also be available throughout the country. Consumers in North Carolina will be able to call a toll free 855 number based in Las Vegas or Toronto and it will still be toll free. There are no regional limitations.

By including a 1-800 number in advertising, on websites and in brochures, small and mid-size business owners can connect to customers nationwide. Toll free phone numbers extend market reach and significantly increase the pool of potential clients. With a 1-800 number obtained from a provider such as Tollfreenumber.ORG, a business in Phoenix can advertise a free phone call to attract customers in Maryland, Maine, Alabama or elsewhere.

To attract customers nationwide, start with a free phone call—and rest assured they work throughout the country, no matter which of the four currently available toll free area codes you choose.

Tollfreenumber.ORG has one of the largest selections of available numbers and will be ready to assist customers the minute the new 855, 844, 833, and 822 numbers become available. Service from Tollfreenumber.ORG can be as much as 40 % less expensive than some larger phone companies.

855 Numbers

Ok, everyone is asking....what is the deal with the 855 numbers? The answer depends on whom you ask.

First, a little background. When 800 numbers began running low in the mid-1990s, the 888 and 877 numbers were released to ease the burden. When those supplies started running dry, 866 was launched. Today, the 855 pre-fixes are being held in reserve by the Federal Communications Commission (along with 844, 833 and so on). The idea is that when supplies of all the remaining 800, 888, 877, and 866 numbers become scarce, the FCC will launch 855 numbers to address the problem. Simple, right? Well, sort of.

The problem is that some people in the industry are very concerned about the dwindling supplies of toll free numbers. And they are wondering when the 855 numbers will finally be released. Others say there are enough numbers remaining---for the moment. But with millions of new users signing up with companies like Tollfreenumber.ORG every day, those available numbers are being used up fast.

There were reports in the fall of 2000 that the 855 numbers were to be released on the heels of the 866 pre-fixes. But it never happened. To this day, with more than two-thirds of the available toll free numbers taken, the FCC has yet to announce exactly when it will launch 855.

Some anticipate that the 855 numbers could be released within the next couple of years. Still, others say it won’t likely happen until 2011.

Having the reserve of new numbers gives some sense of security to those in the industry. But the uncertainty over when they will be launched is something everyone is wondering about.
