Smaller businesses took notice when toll free 800, 888, 877, and 866 numbers became more readily available and were easier to obtain and far more affordable than the original 1-800 numbers. Government agencies and human service organizations began using 1-800 numbers along with the hospitality and travel industry. Meanwhile, big business continued to sign on and it became rare for a national company not to have a 1-800 number.
